I came home last night to find my PS3, the workhorse of my entertainment universe, quietly dead upon my entertainment unit. Sometime during my work day it gave up it's binary ghost, refusing to live in stand-by mode any longer. No amount of coaxing brought it back, so we called Sony and after forty minutes they are shipping us a box to bury Our Little Friend in, whereupon they shall perform an autopsy and attempt to void my warranty before shipping me a new unit.
My favorite part is when they suggest I backup the PS3 HDD so I don't lose things like my saved games. Thankfully I'm not a total dork when it comes to following instructions on removing the HDD; I'll have to commandeer a work machine (I don't have SATA at home anywhere) and make a copy of the files from there.
It'll be a sad two weeks. I'll have to dig my DVD player out of mothballs, and have to limit myself to SD content only, and no video games. Hrm, maybe now I'll finish Neverwinter Nights, or even Zork. Or maybe JD will hammer on me to get some programming done; jerk.
Its not that bad. I have great legs. . . . And a nice fig leaf.
It's Here!
The wife called and told me the PS3 is now back home. She also reports that it appears to be a brand new unit complete with shrink-wrap and seals. Looks like I would not have got my HDD back anyway.
Update 3
I just got an email from UPS that Sony has shipped my PS3 back to me "3 DAY SELECT" so I will not have it until Monday (earliest). And I need to be home to sign for it, or I don't get it. This could be fun. I'll have to work from home on Monday . . . hopefully the boss will go for that.
Update 2
I dropped off the package on Saturday, surprised to find that Sony had paid for Second Day Air to the the PS3 back to them. According to UPS Sony should receive it today (Monday). I'd expect they will not work on it until Tuesday at the earliest, but we'll see. Sony has some kind of tracking app of their own, and I'll be keeping an eye on that as well.
Update 1
I will not receive the instructions and mailing box from Sony until Friday (1/11/2008). We were told I'd have the PS3 10-14 days after they receive it. Anyone care to start a pool on when I will actually have the PS3 back?
